Many popular brands of hair care products contain chemicals that cause damage to the hair and scalp. Additionally, they can strip the hair of its natural oils leading to dry and brittle hair. Skintopia’s focus is on using natural, toxin-free ingredients that nourish, hydrate and strengthen plus help with hair regrowth. Find out more about our ingredients and why they work.
This month I have chosen to focus on something that’s really important to me – hair care. In my late twenties, I was living in London and taking care of cancer patients. As a result of many patients losing their hair as a result of chemotherapy, I began formulating products to assist them with faster and stronger hair regrowth. It was a trial-and-error process, but I finally managed to concoct a hair regrowth tonic and oil that met with much success. It was such a game changer for both me and my patients that I still use these same two formulas decades later.
Inspired by this success, I continued developing hair care products and have now expanded Skintopia’s hair care range to five products. Most of us at some stage of our lives experience problems with our hair including balding, thinning, dryness, itchy scalp, dandruff and greying, to name a few. My focus is on creating products that assist with regrowth, hair nourishment and overall scalp health.
Rosemary is one of my favourite herbs and I use it in many of my products including those for hair care as well as in the infused body massage oil and mineral soaks. It is a magic ingredient for the brain too. By simply rubbing rosemary leaves between your hands and inhaling the scent, you will notice that it promotes mental clarity, and helps with fatigue and brain activation. In terms of hair treatment, it protects against hair loss, stimulates the scalp and speeds up cell regeneration and growth.
Bergamot smells wonderful and the oil is easily absorbed by the scalp and hair. It helps with dry or flaky scalp, dandruff, and oily hair. It may also help to stimulate hair growth and improve the strength of the hair shaft. Bergamot oil is also often used to add shine to the hair and to improve the overall health of the scalp.
Bay rum has a very pleasant smell; reduces frizz, oiliness and dandruff; stimulates hair growth and adds shine.
Lavender oil helps reduce dandruff and other scalp conditions by balancing the production of oil on the scalp, and stimulates hair growth by increasing blood flow to the scalp. It has the added benefit of being known for its calming properties, and using it on the hair and scalp may help to reduce stress and promote relaxation.
Castor oil is highly beneficial for skin, nails and hair. Derived from the castor plant, it is very thick and is an excellent moisturiser for the hair. It can help to keep the hair hydrated and prevent it from becoming dry and brittle. Its hydrating and nourishing properties promote healthy hair. Castor oil has anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties, is rich in vitamin E, and boosts hair growth.
Macadamia oil penetrates the hair follicles easily and coats the hair strands with nourishing fatty acids, vitamins and potassium which makes the hair shinier and stronger. It helps to protect the hair from heat damage and other environmental stresses. It has the added benefit of combatting frizz and flyaway hair.
Shea butter has many healing properties for dry hair. It is high in fatty acids and vitamin E. It is a strong emollient that functions as a natural moisturiser for the scalp and hair. It is also a defence barrier against hair damage and soothes scalp irritations.

Argan oil originates from Morocco and is called liquid gold. It has been used for centuries for home and beauty remedies and is found in many hair and beauty treatments. Argan oil is full of fatty acids and vitamin E which is a superfood for the skin and hair. It moisturises and conditions and the linoleic and oleic acids in the oil lubricate the hair shaft and help your hair to maintain moisture. Vitamin E prevents dryness and can help to boost shine and combat fizziness. Argan oil also improves scalp health with anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties, which can bring relief to sufferers of psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis. It is a powerhouse of goodness for hair and scalp health.
Activated charcoal absorbs dirt, sweat, sebum and oils. It helps to cleanse these impurities which helps the hair to breathe. Charcoal unclogs the pores and detoxifies the hair follicles, which helps with hair growth. It also helps with dandruff and itchy scalp conditions, helps to absorb excess oil, revives dull hair and increases volume.
The coffee oil in our formulas helps with hair loss and promotes hair growth. Caffeine is a stimulant which increases blood flow to the hair and scalp. Here are some handy tips when using our hair care products:
Hair Regrowth Tonic
Our hair regrowth tonic is a water-based formula that should be applied to the scalp 3 to 5 times per week. Rub the mixture onto the scalp or to the balding areas and leave it in overnight. Within 3 to 5 days new hair or stubble will appear, and in no time you will experience fuller hair and regrowth.
Rosemary Coffee Macadamia Scalp & Hair Nourishing Treatment
This nourishing hair and scalp treatment includes macadamia oil, rosemary and lavender. Apply it to dry hair and leave it on for 30 to 60 minutes before rinsing out. Alternatively, you can leave the treatment in overnight but please ensure that your pillow is covered with a towel to avoid an oily stain. Before rinsing, apply shampoo to your dry hair and work the shampoo through the hair to create a soft soapy lather which can then be rinsed out. This method will help dissolve the oils and will ensure that they rinse out easily. Failing to do so with result in the hair cuticle absorbing and retaining the oil and your hair will remain oily even after you have applied shampoo to wet hair and rinsed it.
Argan Coconut Charcoal Shampoo Bar
Wet your hair and rub the soap bar over your hair. Work the soap through your hair and rinse it off. Store the shampoo bar in a cool dry place and do not leave it in water, as it will dissolve.
Coconut Macadamia Hair Butter
This semi-thick mask is wonderful and can be used twice per month. As a swimmer, my hair is often dried out by chlorine. I remedy this by applying this mask in the same way as the oil treatment by applying shampoo to dry hair first and working it into a lather before rinsing it off. This mask leaves my hair in a soft, shiny and nourished condition. It truly is a superfood for hair.
Rosemary Mint Argan Detangler Spray
This easy-to-use spray-on treatment will smooth the hair and make it more manageable, allowing you to brush tangles out easily. It contains small amounts of essential and carrier oils and won’t leave your hair greasy.
Finally, please be vigilant about the products that you’re putting onto your skin and hair. It’s worth educating yourself about potentially harmful ingredients that are included in many popular products and the effects that they may have on your health. You deserve the best, so make sure you’re getting it.
Until next time, happy natural living!
